LCM History
With a desire to establish a Lutheran church in the Mahomet area, seven families met with then Mission Director Pastor Donald Johnson on March 19, 1971, to request assistance. After many prayers, meetings and canvassing the area, on May 2, 1972, the Mission Board gave these families the "go ahead" to form The Lutheran Church of Mahomet with the American Lutheran Church.
Originally holding worship services at the local elementary school, LCM shared a pastor with a Lutheran congregation from St. Joseph, Illinois. The first organized church service was held on October 5, 1972, with Pastor Schowalter conducting the service. After serving for nine months, Pastor Schowalter recommended that a full-time pastor was needed for the growing congregation. Pastor John Kelley answered the Call and was installed on August 5, 1973, as the full-time pastor.
In January 1974, plans for a permanent site of worship began to unfold. Land was purchased, a building committee established, and architects chosen. On Mother's Day, May 12, 1974, 175 members marched from the school site to the new land purchase and broke ground. On Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 1974, the first worship service in the new building was held. The new church was dedicated on December 15, 1974.
Since the original construction in 1974, LCM has undergone two additions. The first addition in 1981 provided additional classroom space. In September 1991, the congregation voted to begin construction of a larger sanctuary and additional classrooms. The new facilities were dedicated on June 28, 1992. The LCM is currently mortgage free.
